Review:
When this movie first came out in 1980, I remember going to see it on opening night. Sheer terror I experienced to see The Shining is enough to make me go to bed with the lights on every night for the entire summer. This movie just scared the life out of me, which is what has happened every time I rent a video to re-watch. I have seen The Shining least six or seven times and I still believe that it is simultaneously and paradoxically one of the most frightening and funny another movie I've ever seen. Scary as exceptionally effective use of long shots to create a sense of isolation, increasing convex lens shots surrealism, and meticulously scored music to bring the excitement to levels almost unbearable. And funny as outrageous and often ad libbed screen antics of Jack Nicholson. It amazes me how The Shining is actually two films in one, both comedy and horror films. Ghostly apparitions of a threat to befall many interesting first half of the film, which gradually evolved into a more serious physical threat as time advanced. Nonetheless, there is surprisingly little violence provided a clear intensity, but it is little consolation for the feint of heart is more implied violence of the manifesto. The Shining is a film that is truly frightening that work on many levels of symbolic, but basically about the vulnerability of people and how they can be exploited by the power of the unconscious to be combined with the weak. The film's most frightening just to use these suggestions to make your own imagination against you. The Shining is a brilliant cinematic masterpiece, the likes of which has never been seen before or since. Highly, highly recommended. - Paul
